[DS Notes] Market Share Alone is Never a Good Indicator of Business

John Kirk explains on TechPinions why the church of market share is a deeply flawed argument. Yes, more market share means the product is more visible, it means there are more consumers of said product but unless it’s viewed in relation to revenue and profits, it’s never going to make sense (or cents). Business wise, it’s necessary for companies to look at the health and efficiency of a business in terms of how much return it earns per output. If a group of companies only earn a small fraction of the profit generated by the entire industry, dwarfed by the profit of just one other company within that industry, they need to conduct a serious evaluation of their strategies.

[DS Notes] Kim Dotcom Has a Patent on Two Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication is a secure login method involving the use of a second passcode to access a service transmitted when a login attempt is detected. The method commonly works by having the service send an SMS to the account holder’s mobile phone number and have the passcode in that SMS entered into the service, thereby ensuring the authenticity of the user. Alternatively, it also works through an authentication app or device tied to the service, which randomly generates the second passcode.

Dating Site Setipe Plans to Launch in June

Former Zalora executive Razi Thalib and his friend Kevin Aluwi have been secretly working on a dating site since they met back in 2011. Thalib, who currently runs digital agency Bridges and Balloons saw the lack of dating sites in Indonesia as an opportunity to come in and do something about it. The site is called Setipe and it’s aimed at people in Jakarta who want to try online dating and want to keep it private.

[DS Notes] Bloomberg Says Google is Also Bidding for Waze

Real-time crowd sourced traffic map Waze is looking at an acquisition bid from Google following a report that Facebook is making an offer to the Israeli startup recently. While Google already has traffic report and even public transportation data on Google Maps, Waze’s method is preferable to 40 million of its users. With bids from Facebook and Google, the company is likely to pull this situation into a bidding war in addition to considering further venture funding instead to expand its services should the bids prove to be unfavorable. Waze’s map service is free for users but the company makes money from selling advertising within its maps.

BBM Money Reaches 60,000 Registered Users in The First Three Months

Monitise through its joint venture company AGIT Monitise Indonesia announces it has attracted 60,000 registered users of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) Money in the first three months. BBM Money is an integrated micropayment solution through BlackBerry Messenger, a collaboration with BlackBerry and Permata Bank. It is targeted to reach 200,000 registered users by the end of the year.
